Appellations de Saint-Émilion

Montagne Saint-Émilion

Montagne Saint-Émilion has been an appellation of controlled origin (AOC) since 1936. It is part of the Libournais region, on the right bank of the Dordogne. It is one of the prestigious appellations of Saint-Émilion (to the south) neighbouring Pomerol (to the west).

The vineyard area covers approximately 1,600 hectares.
Montagne-Saint-Émilion is distinguished by varied reliefs: plateaus, hillsides, valleys, slopes of more or less steep gradient.

The soils are very diversified, but several dominant types: clay-limestone, “calcaire à astéries”, calco-molassic molasses, sandy-gravel terraces in some parts.

Exposure : south and south-west for the hillsides, which improves sunshine; some parts at the edge have lighter soils (sand, gravel) which give a more subtle expression.

Grape varieties : the dominant variety is Merlot; it is complemented by other red varieties: Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon to a lesser degree.

Puisseguin Saint-Émilion

Puisseguin‑Saint‑Émilion AOC is located on the right bank of the Dordogne, about 10 – 15 km north-east of Saint‑Émilion. It has been an appellation of controlled origin (AOC) since the decree of 14 November 1936.

The vineyard area is around 730-760 hectares.

Soils : mostly clay-limestone, sometimes silty or with fine sands. In some sectors there is also a limestone “à astéries” plateau (rather stony), which brings freshness and allows good maturity management.

Exposure : south to south-east is a plus; the climate is temperate oceanic, with rather mild winters, hot summers and long, sunny autumns.

Grape varieties : Main: Merlot (very predominant), Malbec (Côt), Carmenère, Petit Verdot (the last two in limited proportions).

Grape varieties

The dominant grape variety is Merlot: it dominates the planting.

It is often complemented by Cabernet Franc. You will also find, to a lesser extent, Cabernet Sauvignon and Malbec.
